The Nissan LEAF, a compact five-door hatchback electric car manufactured by Nissan and introduced in Japan and the United States in December 2010, is an all-electric car. It produces no tailpipe pollution or greenhouse gas emissions at the point of operation, and contributes to reduced dependence on petroleum. Absent an internal combustion engine, the all-electric LEAF cruises with a quiet serenity at all times.
Innovation: Batteries
Nissan makes its own batteries — a rarity among manufacturers. Nissan has been developing lithium batteries since 1992, and used them in its 1990s EV, the Hypermini. LEAF batteries are covered by an eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty.
Innovation: Recycled Materials
The car is designed for recycling and made with recycled parts — seat fabric comes from recycled water bottles. Nissan claims a recoverability rate of 99% at end of life, with only 1% going to landfill. The lithium-manganese-graphite battery chemistry contains no toxic materials, and lithium can be reclaimed indefinitely for new batteries.
Innovation: Connected Car (CARWINGS)
The LEAF's smartphone app connects you to your car — check the charge, or turn on the air conditioning remotely while it's still plugged in, preconditioning the cabin without using driving range. You can also schedule off-peak charging, and the car can text or email you if it isn't plugged in by a set time.
Innovation: LED Lighting
The LEAF's headlights use two LEDs per headlamp in low-beam operation, drawing just 50 watts — versus roughly 130W for halogen bulbs and 90W for typical LED bulbs elsewhere. At 500 lumens and 5500K colour temperature, these wide-beam lights rank similarly to production HID lamps.

Noise-reduced wiper blades and motors, headlight shapes that route air around the mirrors to cut wind noise, and a navigation system showing driving range based on current battery charge — small refinements that add up to real usability.
Innovation: Price & Availability
Nissan claims the LEAF was the first freeway-speed electric car generally available — before it, freeway-speed EV options with over 70 miles of range were limited to a handful of RAV4 EVs, expensive DIY conversions, or costly sports cars.
